Problem Statement
Climate change is no longer a future crisis—it is a daily reality. In West Bengal, communities face urban heat islands, flooding, embankment erosion, and landslides, yet critical environmental data remains fragmented and inaccessible to citizens in actionable form. This creates a dangerous disconnect between people, climate intelligence, and administrative response systems. At the same time, sustainable behavior remains low due to the absence of incentives, impact visibility, and engaging community participation models. Citizens are aware of climate issues but lack motivation and tools to contribute meaningfully. Furthermore, inefficient and opaque reporting systems delay action on localized hazards like waste overflow, waterlogging, and infrastructure damage, forcing authorities into reactive disaster management instead of proactive prevention.
Solution & AI Usage
EcoGrid Nexus is a gamified, hyper-localized climate intelligence platform that transforms citizens into active environmental stakeholders. By combining real-time ecological telemetry with AI-driven insights, the platform delivers district-specific data such as AQI, green canopy cover, flood risk, and tidal surge alerts in a simple, actionable format for both citizens and administrators. To drive long-term behavioral change, EcoGrid Nexus introduces an interactive Eco-Wallet where users track carbon footprints, complete sustainable actions, and earn “Eco Tokens” and civic reputation badges redeemable for real-world benefits. Sustainability becomes measurable, rewarding, and community-driven. The platform also enables crowdsourced climate resilience through a rapid citizen reporting network. Users can instantly report hazards like waste overflow, waterlogging, or embankment damage with geo-tagged images, creating a decentralized early-warning and environmental response ecosystem.
Full Description
EcoGrid Nexus is a futuristic full-stack sustainability platform built with Next.js that transforms climate action into an engaging, AI-powered, and community-driven experience. Designed with a bold Neo-Brutalist UI, the platform bridges the gap between individual carbon footprints, environmental intelligence, and real-time administrative response systems.
The platform tackles three major global challenges: inaccessible environmental data, low public participation in sustainable practices, and delayed responses to localized climate hazards. EcoGrid Nexus solves this by combining AI analytics, gamification, and crowdsourced climate reporting into one hyper-local ecosystem that empowers both citizens and governments.
At its core is a Public Climate Dashboard delivering real-time district-specific telemetry such as AQI, green canopy cover, flood risks, tidal surge alerts, and environmental threat indices through immersive visualizations. Citizens can use a Carbon Footprint Simulator to analyze lifestyle choices and visualize long-term emission impacts, making sustainability measurable and actionable.
The platform also features a decentralized Citizen Sensor Network where users can instantly report hazards like waterlogging, waste overflow, erosion, or damaged infrastructure using geo-tagged images. These reports are routed directly to municipal authorities, creating a proactive early-warning and rapid-response system instead of reactive disaster management.
A major innovation is WasteVision AI — an on-device TensorFlow.js-powered waste classifier capable of identifying recyclable, compostable, plastic, or e-waste materials directly from uploaded images without cloud dependency. EcoGrid Nexus further introduces a Climate Twin Simulator that allows users to test sustainability scenarios and visualize projected ecological outcomes using local AI inference.
To encourage long-term participation, EcoGrid Nexus includes a gamified Eco-Wallet ecosystem. Users earn “Eco Tokens,” achievement badges, and community rankings for completing sustainable actions such as recycling, conserving energy, using public transport, or reporting hazards. These rewards foster environmental awareness and healthy civic competition.
The platform also integrates an AI Sustainability Assistant powered by local Ollama LLMs such as Mistral and Llama 3, enabling privacy-focused conversations around sustainability, climate awareness, and eco-friendly habits. A visually immersive Climate Intelligence Map built with MapLibre GL and Three.js provides real-time forecasting for floods, urban heat islands, and ecological risks through dynamic geospatial rendering.
Complementing the citizen-facing ecosystem is an Administrative Command Center that enables authorities to verify incidents, monitor climate metrics, broadcast emergency directives, and track sustainability goals in real time.
EcoGrid Nexus empowers citizens with AI-driven climate intelligence, gamified sustainability.
